The annual First Responders: Finest Versus the Bravest event arrives on Saturday to warm up the Martha's Vineyard Ice Arena. The competition pits Island police against firemen in a fundraiser that trades uniforms for skates and hockey sticks.

This year’s event will raise money for one of their own: Nicole Gazaille-Graves and her husband Bob Graves. Nicole has served as a dispatcher on the Island for 25 years and Bob, who is recovering from a heart transplant, was a chief at the Dukes County Jail.

Funds raised will also sponsor a camper at the YMCA’s summer camp.

The puck drops at 5:30 p.m. on March 25 at the Ice Arena and the competition promises to be fierce and friendly. Many involved came up through the Island hockey program and lacing up their skates is a time-honored tradition when not out helping the Island community.

Suggested donation is $10 per family. There will be raffle tickets and prizes, and for the younger member of the audiences a Touch-a-Truck event that begins at 4 p.m.
