As the holiday season rolls in, and the emails are inundated with online shoppers pitching woo, there is always the local scene to consider. Downtown businesses beckon and so do the crafty among us, often as a community of artists hosting sales of handmade goods.

The World Market holiday pop-up shop has taken up residence at the Capawock Theatre on Main street, Vineyard Haven, featuring an extended blockbuster of handmade artisan products, from art to textiles, dolls, jewelry, crafts and more.

Also in downtown Vineyard Haven, the Louisa Gould Gallery is showcasing its Small Wonders holiday show, with small affordable artworks for sale from over a dozen Island artists.

In Oak Bluffs, Featherstone Center for the Arts has a daily holiday gift show featuring paintings, photography, pottery, crafts, jewelry, knitwear, and much more from local artists.

In West Tisbury, Heather Gardens at 377 State Road is playing host to a host of local artists this month offering wreaths, sea salt, jams and jellies, ceramics, the list keeps going.

And you can keep going too, all the way to Aquinnah to visit the Aquinnah artisans holiday fair, taking place this weekend, on Dec. 11 and 12, which also includes food provided by Goldie’s Rotisserie food truck along with Orange Peel Bakery treats. There will be an ornament and card making craft table too.

And at the Chilmark Church, a summer favorite will take roost for one day. The Chilmark Flea is settling in on Sunday, Dec. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with numerous summer vendors along with greens and centerpieces for sale.

But of course, sometimes there is no need to shop. Rather, it is more than enough to just drive about in the evening and look at the lights. There are the big displays — in Oak Bluffs at Ocean Park, with synchronized music at 88.5 care of Crossland’s Landscape, and the Gatchell house at 148 County Road, where an astounding array of lights and holiday magic abound, plus a bit of giving back as onlookers are encouraged to leave a donation for the Island Food Pantry.

And all along the way, whether shopping or grazing or gazing, there are candles in windows to ponder, porches winking brightly to savor, the occasional Santa on rooftop to marvel at, and angles everywhere to aspire to.
