Cities succeed or fail at street level, that truism matters from island to island, Manhattan to Martha’s Vineyard. Sacrificing 12 parking spaces in Oak Bluffs for better sidewalks is a wise choice. How much money will the occupants of those 12 spaces spend in the shops and restaurants as opposed to how much money tourists will spend if they feel more comfortable and linger in the town?

Wider sidewalks, perhaps outdoor dining, will keep people in Oak Bluffs longer than 12 cars of folks keeping with an eye on the two-hour parking limit.

Implement the program and the business will be as happy as I am with a Last Word at the end of the day!
