Steamship Authority managers are coming to Vineyard Haven Oct. 28 to hear what Island residents have to say about the boat line’s draft mission statement, due to be finalized next month.

The open house meeting begins at 4 p.m. in the classroom at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. The SSA also is at missionfeedback@steamshipauthority.com.

Following a round of similar open house meetings in port towns last month, the SSA updated the draft to read “Our mission is to operate a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system for the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in an environment committed to sustainability, accessibility, and community engagement.”

A mission statement is the first step toward developing a long-term strategic plan, according to HMS and Glosten, the maritime industry consultants who performed an in-depth study of boat line operations last year.

While Monday’s open house is aimed at making sure Islanders have every chance to weigh in on the statement, SSA leaders will be listening to comments on other topics as well.

Treasurer/comptroller Mark Rozum said he foresees the boat line holding more such informal gatherings on the Island in order to encourage comment from Martha’s Vineyard residents.

The next board of governors meeting is Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. at the SSA’s administrative building on Palmer avenue in Falmouth. In addition to voting on the mission statement, the board is expected to receive a presentation on the latest design concept for the Woods Hole terminal building.

Following widespread public opposition to a series of two-story building designs, architects from BIA Studio in Boston came up with a single-story structure that has a nearby utility building to hold some of the mechanical equipment that had been planned for the second floor of earlier designs.

The latest building concept also has solar panels on the roof and solar-topped bus bays outside, which together would supply about half the new building’s energy needs, according to boat line general manager Robert Davis.

Drawings and descriptions of the new design concept are posted on the Steamship Authority website.
