Season of Meteor Showers

Stargazing nights are at their best this time of year. The season invites us outside to enjoy the mild temperature of the night air. The stars above are especially friendly because of the weather.

The Delta Aquarid meteor shower will peak on Tuesday morning before dawn. Meteors can be seen late at night but you could spot a few earlier. The moon is out of play for most of the night, not showing up for a few hours before dawn.

Astronomers estimate that you could see more than 20 meteors in an hour of viewing. Here on the Vineyard we are more conservative. The sky tends to be hazy from the moist ocean.

This is also the season of fireflies and we’ve seen plenty.

Stay tuned as the month comes to an end and we move into August. The most popular meteor shower of the year is the Perseid meteor shower and that peaks on the weekend of August 11.
