This week we thought we’d do a recap of how successful our summer has been. It’s been a dog season with all cages filled, but everyone has found new forever homes. There was Buddy the rottweiler, Rosie the boxer mix, Noni the golden retriever and her housemate Jimi the Cardigan corgi, who went to New Jersey. And of course the two adorable cavalier King Charles spaniels, Buckley and Bentley, who were able to stay together on the Island.

It’s also been a good time for guinea pig adoptions. Mama Fudge and her four offspring all found forever homes, as did housemates Maple and Lucky, who went together. And Ruby found a home as well. Congratulations to all the children who were able to convince their parents to let them have a piggy; make sure to take proper care of your new pet.

As for our feline residents, Felicity and her kittens went to forever homes, as did Holly. And all stray cats were reunited with their families. Speaking of strays, we’d like to remind everyone that friendly cats that show up in your yard are usually not strays, so please don’t feed them. If they know you provide food they’ll show up daily for their treat. Check with your neighbors first before bringing any “stray” animal into the shelter.

We currently have a five-year old male Bichon Frise named Ty. He’s cute as a button, sweet as can be, and a perfect apartment size dog. Bichons have hair rather than fur so may not aggravate someone with allergies to dogs. Stop by to meet this little gem, he won’t last long.

The shelter has two sweet young female cats waiting for their new forever homes. They are a mother and daughter, and both are very pretty. Snow is the mother. She is only three, mostly white with a black ringed tail, blue eyes, and some pale tabby markings on her head and legs. She also has some Siamese in her. Her daughter Fran is only a year old. She is a little bigger than her mom, a black and gray tabby with lots of white and light green eyes. Both girls are affectionate and need to have someone to share their love with. Could that be you?

Lobby cat Chaps is at home at the shelter. He’s quite comfortable living here but if someone should fall in love with him we might be willing to let him go. He’s 12 years old, white with striking black markings, and a very mellow boy. He’s content to hang out and have a safe place with some tasty food and a little attention.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston’s spay/neuter wagon visit the shelter on Wednesday, Sept. 13, but has reached capacity. They will be here again in October and November so please contact your local animal control officer for more information if you have a pet you would like to have spayed or neutered.

And remember that ticks and fleas are still with us so please keep up with your treatments.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662. Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations.
