When six-time Tony Award-winning Audra McDonald is not on a Broadway stage, she’s probably in the green room. On Monday though, she’ll be on the Vineyard sharing stories and songs from the stage, gossip from the green room and just about anything else Sirius XM Radio star Seth Rudetsky asks her about.

Ms. McDonald is the only person to win all four acting categories at the Tony Awards. And on Monday, she will perform at the Performing Arts Center as part of the Broadway at the PAC summer series. Her husband and fellow Broadway star, Will Swenson, will join the performance, which will follow a similar eclectic narrative as other shows in the series with Mr. Rudetsky taking the lead in asking questions and deciding which songs Ms. McDonald will sing. Though she’ll be in Mr. Rudetsky’s hot seat on Monday, it’s not her first time.

“He’s asked me questions about other famous people I’ve met or experiences with famous people, audition experiences, backstage stories, things from my childhood, you just never know,” Ms. McDonald said.

Ms. McDonald is known for her roles in Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, and A Raisin in the Sun as well as on television as Dr. Naomi Bennett in Private Practice. She just finished starring in the Broadway hit Shuffle Along.

Her favorite songs “tell a story, communicate any sort of emotion or idea,” she said. And that preference makes the musical theatre canon the perfect genre. It also helps that she’s been singing musical theatre her entire life. She studied classical voice at Juilliard, performs opera and has released five albums spanning from big band music to jazz and pop.

Her connection to performance goes beyond her own entrance into performing arts when she was eight. For Ms. McDonald, theatre is visceral. She thinks of people telling stories around a fire and the theatrical culture of ancient Greece and sees a proclivity that is innate.

“It’s part of the human condition,” she said. “Theatre’s been around for thousands and thousands of years. There is something in the human condition that needs it and wants it.”

Audra McDonald performs at the Performing Arts Center on Monday, August 22 at 8 p.m.
