A rolled ankle stood no chance of ruining perfection on Monday. The Martha’s Vineyard girls' tennis team beat Carver High School 5-0 in the south district quarterfinals despite the absence of starting freshman Kelly Klaren.

“We’re very lucky that our number one tennis duo has the ability to sub-in and play individually at an excellent level,” head coach Nina Bramhall said in reference to freshman Victoria Scott and sophomore Lizzie Williamson.

Scott and Williamson, the first duo in MVRHS history to win an individual district championship, both won their singles matches easily at 6-0, 6-0. The duo normally competes together, but Klaren’s injury forced Bramhall to use the girls as her number two and three singles starters for two of the individual matches.

Klaren’s recovery timetable remains unknown. The freshman sprained her ankle last week and the team hopes to have her back in time for their next match.

Kat Roberts won her match 6-1, 6-0, securing a Martha’s Vineyard victory before both team’s doubles finished their matches. The Vineyarders won their first doubles match 6-4, 6-1 and their second doubles match 7-5, 6-2.

“We’re just looking forward to the next [match] and we’re looking to do just as well for the rest of the reason,” said Roberts. The team, now 17-0, moves on to the south district semifinals.

The Vineyarders play Cohasset High School on Wednesday at MVRHS.
