Girls’ tennis continues their reign atop the MIAA’s Division III south district. After last year's undefeated season and state championship, the team is poised to begin their off-season at home against Carver High School on Tuesday, June 6 at 4 p.m. The team is once again undefeated.

“We don’t take anything for granted,” said head coach Nina Bramhall. “We’re never looking at winning states, we’re looking at winning the next match we have to play.”

Finishing their season at 16-0, the team also took home the girls’ doubles district championship for the first time in school history when duo Lizzie Williamson and Victoria Scott defeated Barnstable 6-1, 6-0.

Boys’ tennis advanced to the district quarterfinals after beating Mashpee High School in the tournament’s first round. Seeking redemption after last year’s loss to Old Rochester Regional High School in the district semifinals, the team attempts a return to their glory days of 2012 and 2013 when they won back-to-back state championships. The Vineyarders play Old Rochester on Monday, looking to write a different ending this year.

The team’s overall record finished at 12-4 and earned the district tournament’s 10th seed.

Senior captain Jacob Cardoza pitched six strong innings for the high school baseball team in the first round of the Division III south district tournament on Thursday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to keep the season alive.

The team improved by two wins this year but repeated last year’s first round exit with a 4-2 loss to Bourne High School.

“The kids did a great job overall, they worked hard and really improved a ton,” coach Gary Simmons said after the game.

Three seniors earned 2016 Eastern Athletic Conference (EAC) All-Star honors this year: Cardoza, James Sashin and Jonas Lukowitz.

Long-time boys’ lacrosse coach Chris Greene announced his retirement after the Vineyarders’ season-ending defeat at Hanover High School in the district tournament’s first round. Losing 17-5, the team faced the tournament’s top-ranked team as a 16th seed with an 8-8 record.

“The record isn’t a reflection of this program’s improvement,” said Coach Greene. The eighth-year head coach praised his team’s EAC All-Stars, specifically seniors Ben Clark, Austin Chandler, Eli Laikin and Tom Irwin.

Losing four straight games heading into the playoffs, boys’ lacrosse needed a preliminary round win to keep their season alive. The Vineyarders rose to the occasion with an admirable 12-8 victory against Mashpee.

Girls’ lacrosse marched into the Division II south district quarterfinals after a nail-biting 9-7 win over Archbishop Williams at MVRHS. The team rode momentum into the playoffs after winning six of their last seven games. Earning a sixth seed in the tournament, the team finished the regular season with a 10-6 record.

The team plays at Scituate High School on Monday with a spot in the district semifinal on the line.

Girls’ softball failed to earn a playoff bid after posting a 6-12 record. Despite scoring a combined 39 runs in their first three games, the team’s offense struggled to find consistency. Three different schools shut out the Vineyarders on four separate occasions.

“Next year’s going to be a rebuilding year,” said retiring head coach Donald Herman. “The biggest concern will be the pitching situation.” Herman coached the team for eight years.

The team loses senior starting pitcher Jessica Sonia along with senior Emily Turney, who anchored the lineup with her fourth EAC All-Star selection in as many years. Turney committed to play at Adelphi University of the Division II Northeast-10 conference. With only three seniors leaving, the softball team hopes to carry over their late season success into 2017 after winning two of their last three games.
