Working in frigid conditions, volunteer firefighters quickly contained a blaze in a multifamily home in Edgartown Thursday night, but were unable to save a family dog.

The dog succumbed to smoke inhalation, the fire department said in a press release Friday morning. One firefighter was transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for to be evaluated and later released.

The call came just after 7:30 p.m. with a report of a structure fire at 2 Pennywise Path. Edgartown fire and police responded to the scene, and an engine and rehab unit were requested from Oak Bluffs as mutual aid.

All occupants of the home were safely out by the time firefighters arrived on the scene, police said.

Weather conditions were in the deep freeze register, with temperatures hovering at 16 degrees and a wind chill factor of minus three degrees. Freezing lines were an issue but were not a factor in the outcome, the fire department said.

The blaze was contained within 20 minutes and firefighting personnel stayed on the scene until after midnight containing hot spots and securing the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard, led by shelter director Lisa Hayes, earned a note of thanks from the Edgartown police for offering assistance.

“Your thoughtfulness and compassion did not go unnoticed,” a post on the police Facebook page said Friday morning.
