It is so hard to imagine every summer what the Island is going to look like come winter. So much was canceled last weekend, so many plans changed. In the next few weeks I suggest you call ahead for your events in case weather is getting the upper hand. The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center canceled last Friday night’s service. They recommend that you call 508-693-0745 to check on listings, or see the web page at mvhc.us. The center also wants you to note that any mail for them should be sent to P.O. Box 692, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. Please do not use the street address.

Betty Burton always has an interesting project percolating. Her latest in the MiniMakersFaire on May 7 at the Agricultural Hall. Plenty of time to work on your projects. Among the various items accepted will be drones, Lego sculptures, radios, even musical performances. Check the information at mvminimakerfaire@gmail.com, or stop in and see Busy Betty at our library.

Amy Ryan wants to remind you that February is Food for Fines month at the library. Be sure to check the photography exhibit of Henry Stephenson at Art in the Stacks during regular library hours.

The Vineyard Playhouse hosts its own art space. The current show is the work of Ed Schulman. The playhouse regrets that last Monday’s storm resulted in the cancellation of the weekly movie hosted by Jamie Alley. But if the weather doesn’t intrude, this Tuesday, Feb. 16 will see poet laureate Arnie Reisman hosting our poetry cafe at the playhouse. Ten dollars cash at the door admits you to hear some great work by our Island poets. It also comes with a cup of coffee and a slice of pie.

Speaking of poetry, my Academy of American Poets offers Valentine’s poems, and black history month poems, at poets.org. We are gearing up for national poetry month and a poem in your pocket daily. This brings me right back to thinking about Abigail McGrath and her Renaissance House workshop, offered for 15 years in season on Martha’s Vineyard. We are hoping to hold it this year again as we had to take a break last summer. Contact me if you can help.

What would Valentine’s Day be without music and song? Travel across borders to our Stop & Shop in Edgartown on Sunday, Feb. 14 to hear and enjoy Michael Haydn play five one-hour sets of music between 1 and 6 p.m. We always appreciate live music on a cold winter’s day.

Happy Chinese New Year to all. My dear friend, Teri Praskach, introduced me to this wonderful holiday two years ago when I was sick in Boston. She prepared red envelopes with a dollar and nice words for Nonna and me to keep under our pillows. She decorated my house with the most beautiful dragons and lanterns. She attended a Chinese New Year dinner with me at Beacon House in Boston where we stayed while I had surgery. I shall never forget the beautiful Chinese woman who sang a capella in her language to entertain us. Now Teri needs our help and prayers. Please continue to send loving thoughts to this Renaissance woman, flower farmer, artist, master chef, best friend. Cards to Teri may be addressed to her c/o Gardella, 8 Linda Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605. Thank you. I shall keep you updated.

Get well wishes worked for Fred Shapiro, and I hope for Linda Alley.
