Edgartown selectmen named 12 police officers to new three-year appointments, at their meeting Tuesday.

In a letter to the board of selectmen, Chief David Rossi requested selectmen reappoint Sgts. Craig Edwards and Thomas Smith, Det. Michael Snowden, and officers Jonathan Searle, James Craig, William Oteri, Stephanie Immelt, William Bishop, Nicholas Phelps, Dayce Moore, Jeffrey Trudel and Ryan Ruley.

Selectman Margaret Serpa, who chaired the meeting in the absence of chairman Michael Donaroma, cited a May 2015 report by town labor counsel Jack Collins, who made a series of recommendations for the police department. At the time he issued the report, Mr. Collins was interim police chief, appointed by selectmen to evaluate the department and make a recommendation for hiring a new chief of police.

“These are some of the things we’re going to change,” Ms. Serpa said.

Town administrator Pam Dolby said the appointments will bring the department into line for more orderly future appointments. Other members of the department, including Chief Rossi and Lieut. Chris Dolby, were appointed to three-year terms within the past year.

Also Tuesday, animal control officer Barbara Prada presented her quarterly report, which included a 2015 census of farm animals in Edgartown.

According to the report, there are 1,726 chickens in Edgartown. There are also 58 beef cattle, 11 goats, 115 sheep, 10 pigs and 46 horses, 15 of which are miniature horses.

Ms. Prada also told selectmen she is aware of a seasonal resident who wants to import zebras and giraffes to a farm in Edgartown.

“I don’t think she knows how many permit hoops she’s going to have to jump through,” Ms. Prada said. “I’m crossing my fingers and hoping it’s not going to happen. It’s a lot of permitting.”
