On Jan. 9 eight martial arts students aged 7 to 12 participated in the 2016 Independent Practitioners and Promoters of New England’s kick-off tournament in Boxborough. They competed in forms, fighting and weapons.

The contingent of Island martial artists did well, winning 10 medals. Braedyn Clark, 12, blue belt, won second place in forms and fighting; Izzy Blake, 8, green belt, won second place in forms; Oisin McVey, 9, green belt, won fourth place in weapons; Brayden BenDavid, 7, orange belt, won fourth place in forms and fighting; Joey McCaferri, 11, orange belt, won second place in forms and first in fighting; Talia McCaferri, 7, orange belt, won first place in forms and fighting.

The students train at Blitz Fitness, a West Tisbury fitness and martial arts studio offering classes to youth and adults in spinning, strength training, self-defense, Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
