Sometimes you want to know exactly what you are looking at — a beach, a boat, a still life of a bowl on a table with a flower leaning just so. But other times you want your senses challenged and the call of the abstract beckons. Well, this weekend is for you.

Louisa Gould is holding her eighth annual abstract art show at her gallery in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, August 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. The show is called The Poetry of Abstraction and features work by Jennifer Ellwood, Martha Mae Jones, Michaele Christian, Roberta Gross, Laura Roosevelt, Genevieve Jacobs and Pamela Flam.

In addition, the gallery will host an artist talk this week, on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 5 p.m. with Roberta Gross, an abstract painter and the curator for The Poetry of Abstraction show.
