This Monday at Flatbread Pizza, singer Donavon Frankenreiter will give a performance of new and old music, marking his return to the Vineyard after performing on the Island several years prior.

“It’s a Monday night, but on the Vineyard I think it’ll feel like a Friday,” said Mr. Frankenreiter in a recent interview with the Gazette. “It really is great to have a chance to come back.”

Mr. Frankenreiter has a unique history as an artist, having previously been a surfer on the West Coast and a personal friend of Jack Johnson before breaking into the music business relatively recently.

“I got into the music scene right as the record industry kind of collapsed,” he said. “Nowadays I wouldn’t even know where to start.”

While Mr. Frankenreiter has been playing music since high school, he didn’t start writing his own original music until he was in his 30s. Now, he has released several albums, including a new one on August 4.

“I always play songs off every record,” Mr. Frankenreiter said. “We play acoustic, we play electric, we do a lot.”

But above all else, Mr. Frankenreiter emphasized his attraction to smaller, local venues like those on the Island.

“It’s exciting, because you never really know who’s going to show up at your gig,” Mr. Frankenreiter said. “There are so many great musicians on the Island. And that’s part of what I love about performing on Martha’s Vineyard.”

The show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are available at donavonf.brownpapertickets.com.

Opening for Mr. Frankenreiter will be Phil daRosa, who is also producing the show. Earlier this summer Mr. daRosa produced the Martha’s Vineyard Sound Festival. Events at Flatbread, like the one with Mr. Frankenreiter, are part of his vision for keeping music alive on the Island.

“There are just these certain little energies and vibes you get from performing live, and especially at a local place like this one,” said Mr. Frankenreiter. “And it’s always fun getting the tour bus on the ferry.”
