I have received eight personal text messages (make that nine) from a litany of friends (a few who forgot to think first) today reminding me that Uber’s presence on the Vineyard is somewhat inevitable and fast approaching. I’m aware of the situation (far more than most), from helping run a family-owned taxi service on this Island for a decade now. I keep myself informed.

I have read, researched and conversed about the ride sharing app for the last two years. I have used it a half dozen times as well. There’s a few positives and a whole lot of negatives that are starting to be exposed. Will it work here? I think it will always exist in some facet just about everywhere; it’s just a matter of how it’s regulated.

This unique (somewhat old school) environment finds residents and local leaders being stubborn to change. Hey, I hated the idea of the roundabout too, but it works.

Our business has worked incredibly hard to build a loyal customer base, provide top notch service with hardworking, loyal employees. I think the general public and our awesome customers appreciate it. I’ve read a lot of negative comments directed toward the industry and quite frankly I know it doesn’t pertain to us. Read Yelp, read social media, look at the Best of the Vineyard results.

Customers are happy with us and convey their gratitude every day when we answer the phone, chat with them and build working relationships.

Do I want to lose my job and move off this rock? No. Do I want Wendy’s to open at Five Corners and push out the 100-plus Black Dog employees? No. Do I want Applebee’s to buy out the Wharf? Negative. Do I think the hip, fun, funky folks listening to Willy Mason at Mocha Mott’s would look good in a Dunkin’ Donuts uniform? Not quite dudes and dudettes.

This rock of love is different. We’ll make do. Continue to support us, keep telling your friends we do a great job and for the love of God don’t ask me if I’m worried about my job security (everyone should be, regardless of what you do — because someone can always do it cheaper).

Lastly, I always vote and am pretty up to date on local politics. I’m urging town administrators, selectmen, the SSA and the airport commission (there still is one, right?) to step up to the plate and hit a home run for the locals.
