The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival begins its 15th annual run with the opening film, Red Dot on the Ocean: The Matt Rutherford Story. The documentary profiles Mr. Rutherford’s quest to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping. Mr. Rutherford will be on hand to talk about his journey after the screening.

The festival continues through Sunday, March 22, screening films at the Chilmark Community Center, the Chilmark library and the Chilmark School, or “the campus,” as the organizers call it. There will also be food served throughout the weekend and a host of children’s activities.

The children’s programming has long been an essential component of the spring festival, and for the summer series, too. This year there are numerous family films, including a series of animated short films on Saturday at 9 a.m., and the film Song of the Sea, by the same team that made The Secret of Kells, at 5 p.m. on Saturday. There are also filmmaking workshops for kids on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

On Saturday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. all ages are invited to make a live-action short film at the community center art shack. Kids can drop by at any time during that period, for a few hours or a few minutes. Then on Sunday from 9 to 9:45 a.m., children ages two to five can check out Hearing the Movies, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. kids ages six to 12 can participate in Acting and the Movies, from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. there is Sound and the Movies for kids ages three to seven, and for ages 10 and older there is Directing and the Movies from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

On Sunday at 6:30 p.m. the kids’ films created during the weekend will be screened.
