A standout season for the varsity girls’ basketball team came to a tough ending Tuesday night as the Vineyard fell to Abington in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association division three south section semifinals.

Despite an early lead and stellar play on defense, the Vineyard lost 37-30 to the number one seed in the bracket.

Two buses of fans and dozens of cars made the trip up to Massasoit Community College to cheer on the Vineyarders, who were the last sports team standing in the postseason.

Abington entered the game with a 22-2 record. The Vineyard was 18-4, and seeded fourth. Last week, the team picked up an exciting 55-53 win over Hanover in the section quarterfinals.

Tuesday’s game was no less of a fight.

“It was definitely a defensive battle,” head coach Maureen Hill said. The Vineyard came out strong, going up 10-4 against their opponents and shutting down the offense. But the defensive effort led to several early fouls called on the Vineyard; Abington’s first points all came on free throws.

The Vineyarders trailed by a slim margin, 16-14, at the half.

Abington led by nine points at one point, but the Vineyard cut the lead to five before one final basket by the Green Wave sealed the game.

Sophomore Erin Hill led the Vineyard in scoring, with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and six blocks. Freshman Molly deBettencourt had six points, five rebounds, and four assists.

The Vineyard had been hungry for a rematch with the Green Wave going into the game. They last played Abington on Jan. 2, and lost by just five points, 42-37. In their first meeting in December, the Vineyard fell 62-38.

“It was a great year, and we’ll be back,” Coach Hill said. She thanked the fans for their support throughout the season, and saluted the seniors on the team: Diamond Araujo, Tajia Browne, Emily deBettencourt, and Mariah Duarte.

“It was a fun, fun year because of them,” the coach said.
