Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s student newspaper, the High School View, took home a top award from the New England Scholastic Press Association.

The High School View won the highest achievement award in scholastic editing and publishing (Class III), according to a press release from faculty advisor and English department chairman Dan Sharkovitz.

The award was presented by executive director Helen F. Smith at the 66th annual NESPA conference held May 2 at Boston University.

Seniors Sarah Ortlip-Sommers, Nathaniel Horwitz and Galen Mayhew served as the newspaper’s editors-in-chief. Thirty-five journalists worked on the View this year. The paper is printed by the Martha’s Vineyard Times.

Two students won individual special achievement awards for excellence in scholastic journalism. Thorpe Karabees won for his artwork illustration, and Christopher Aring-Sharkovitz for his news story.

“Our staff has worked incredibly hard this year to make The High School View an excellent newspaper,” Sarah Ortlip-Sommers said in the release. “I am grateful for all of our contributors -- artists, writers, photographers -- whose work has been crucial to the success of this newspaper. It’s strange to think we’ll be graduating next month and passing the newspaper to next year’s editors, especially because journalism has been such an important part of our lives, both in and out of school. I’m sure my co-editors would agree that working on the High School View has been integral to our high school experiences and our growth as writers and editors.”
