Chilmark’s summer season is underway. There are many hints to assure us this is true. The traffic on the weekend of cars of every vintage, bikes, motorcycles and pedestrians was the obvious clue and the general good mood of the visitors spoke of some happy reunions and celebrations to come. There were a number of tents around town at the usual wedding locations and that increased our visitor count also. It is all good news to those of us who wait for the excitement and enjoy it. Most of us have long ago learned to live with the unique rhythm of a summer resort and to appreciate the challenge.
The Chilmark Community Church will celebrate the 3rd annual blessing of the fleet on Sunday morning, June 23 at the 9 a.m. meeting hour. The congregation invites us all to join them at the dock in Menemsha at 9 a.m. for the service. Especially invited are all the captains of boats, large and small, in the harbor. The children are offered opportunities to participate in the service. It is a happy and uplifting experience enjoyed by those who either watch or participate. There will be chairs for those who might choose not to stand for the hour.
The town hall sends word that the Squibnocket Beach will be closed all day June 25 to traffic as they will be repairing the winter storm damage to the parking lot.
The Chilmark Library will present a documentary by Tom Garber, Salt of the Sea, on June 26 at 5 p.m. The program is a study of the difficulties of fishermen who fish in the ground fishing industry of New England. Tom is an acclaimed filmmaker who has made many successful documentaries. The program is cosponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Library and the Menemsha Fisheries Fund, and will be of interest to many in our town who in some way are affected by the ups and downs of the fishing industry.
The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club will present its biennial Bloomin’ Art exhibit at the Old Mill in West Tisbury. This event includes the works of 30 artists and flower arrangements that are inspired by the art works. The art is for sale and there is a $5 admission fee. The works may be seen on June 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, June 30 from noon to 3 p.m.
We all send birthday wishes to Florence Flanders at Windermere who turned 97 this week past. Her son, Allan, of Milton, was at his Chilmark home and shared the day with her. Florence is the widow of Leslie Flanders — Chilmarkers all.
Peter and Della Darling are settled into their Quitsa home for the summer. They have enjoyed visits from family already and anticipate many more.
Linda Thompson will be displaying her recent paintings at the Chilmark Library. They may be viewed during regular library hours.
Tom Langman of Washington is now at his Menemsha home for the season. He is enjoying the restoration of his once-a-barn home, which is now complete.
Betty Kogen of South Road and Norwalk, was at her Chilmark home for a quick visit. She was traveling with her friend, Judith Rummette, also of Norwalk. We hope to see Betty again once the season is over.
Andy and Ellen Jacknain are here at their Larsen Lane home from Washington for the season.
There is a lot going on on Larsen Lane. Carol and Doug Whittier are at the Smith cottage coming from Winthrop, Me. They are joined by their son Jonathan and his family. The family has welcomed a new cousin born on Saturday to Megan and Nathaniel Smith of Portland, Me. She is named Isla Maynew Smith and has a big sister, Evelyn. Nathaniel is the son of Ginger and Hariph Smith. All are longtime seasonal residents of Menemsha. We look forward to Isla’s first visit to her ancestral home. Jill and David Johnstone of Ashland are here for their annual vacation on Larsen Lane. They are joined this week by their daughter, Heather, of Atlanta, Ga.
Teri and Doug Hise of Camden, Me., are visiting the Weber family at their Larsen Lane cottage.
The Chilmark Community Church will begin its much anticipated twice a week flea market on North Road on June 26. The word is out that there are new vendors and a full field with a waiting list of other vendors. It will be fun to visit each Wednesday and Saturday.
The Chilmark Community Church has resumed its Tuesday take-away lobster rolls, a much anticipated treat of the summer. They will be making lobster rolls from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays for the coming season. Not to be missed.
Bob and Kathie Barrett of Rochester spent an early vacation at their home on the Menemsha Crossroad. It was special in that they celebrated the 40th anniversary of the building of that home. Cathy Swanberry joined them and they all look forward to another visit this season.
The Relamar is in the harbor. Always a signal of August, this year the yacht is here early and will be around for the coming season. A family wedding this month created the opportunity for an early start to the season.
Billie Hancock is due here for a visit with her daughter, Buffy and husband, Gil Carroll at Quansoo. Billie hopes to surprise her grandson, Christian, with this visit. Perry Mehring and Judy Banker Mehring are at their Chilmark home and are happy to be welcoming their son, Adam Banker, and his wife, Joanne Simon, for the July 4th week. Granddaughter Eva Natalie will accompany them and be the center of the joy of the visit for her grandparents, who hope to entertain her at our town beaches.
The Yard is preparing for the start of their children’s camp, Flytime, kids make dance. The camp begins on July 15 and runs through August 9, Monday through Friday, 9:30 to noon for ages 6 to 11. You can visit dancetheyard.org for more information.
The Chilmark Library is now offering free technical help for patrons who need assistance navigating their online CLAMs account, or in learning how to download e-books and audio books to an iPod, Kindle, Nook, smart phone, MP3 player or other electronic devices. Miki Wolfe will be on loan from the Oak Bluffs Library Monday mornings throughout the summer. We are asked to call the library at 508-645-3360 to make an appointment for a 20-minute one-on-one session with Miki. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Library.
