In an effort to spread the success of raising mussels offshore, local Vineyard commercial fishermen and shellfishermen are being invited to a special workshop on mussel farming on Friday, May 17 in Rhode Island.

Scott Lindell, of the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, an authority on aquaculture, said the workshop will center on four different offshore sites in New England that have been raising mussels. In addition, he said: “We are fortunate to have a veteran of the mussel farming industry in New Zealand give a presentation. We want to keep everyone up to date on the development of offshore mussel farming.”

The workshop is sponsored by the Rhode Island Sea Grant, Northeastern Regional Aquaculture Center, Roger Williams University and the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. It will run from 12:30 to 5 p.m.
