Last year the Vineyard Playhouse began an ambitious capital campaign to refurbish the theatre in Vineyard Haven. Because of construction the house was dark last summer, although the show did go on at several other locations throughout the Island. This summer the downstairs area of the Playhouse will open. Funds are still being raised, though, to complete the main stage upstairs, renamed the Patricia Neal Stage.

For those on the West Coast there will be a fundraiser on May 4 in Los Angeles from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $150. Call 508-560-4101. Ms. Neal was an Oscar-winning actress and a regular at the Playhouse. “She came to everything,” said MJ Bruder Munafo, the executive artistic director of the Playhouse.

She also performed her one-woman show there just a few years before she died. “It was a very special night and the house was packed,” said Ms. Bruder Munafo. “She was a real Hollywood star.”

If you can’t make it to LA, at least check out Hud to see Ms. Neal in her onscreen glory.
