The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ tennis team won the state Division 3 Championship — their first ever — over Nashoba Thursday, sweeping the first four matches in straight sets. (The fifth match was still being played at this time.)

The boys capped a dream, 23-0 season by clinching the first three of five matches in 50 minutes. Justice Yennie won his singles match in less that half an hour, with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. That was followed by a 6-1, 6-1 doubles win by Jackson McBride and Natty Schneider. The clincher came shortly thereafter when Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 doubles triumph. Kent Leonard won his singles match, 6-3, 6-4.

This is the high school’s fourth state title in its history. The girls’ basketball squad won it all during their heyday in the seventies. Boys’ hockey has won twice, during the 1998-99 season, and again in 2000-2001.
