The Dukes County commissioners will consider five candidates, ranging in background from attorneys to management positions, for the position of county manager. Four candidates are from the Vineyard, one is from the mainland.

Search committee members reviewed the finalists at a meeting Tuesday morning. The on-Island candidates are Christopher Knowles, health director for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah); Martina Thornton, current executive assistant to the county manager; Jessica Burgoyne, property manager for Morgan Woods affordable housing development, and Jeffrey Madison, an attorney on the Island.

The off-Island candidate is Katherine Rogers, an attorney for Merrimack County in New Hampshire.

Members of the search committee, which includes Carlene Gattling, Leonard Jason Jr., Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter 3rd and Mike Joyce, said they will finalize their candidates on Friday and present their recommendations to the full board of commissioners in the coming weeks. The board of commissioners will then conduct public interviews.

The new manager will take the position formally held by Russell Smith, who left his post after four years on the job earlier this month. County treasurer Noreen Flanders has served as interim county manager since then.
