The Edgartown selectmen Monday approved a single tax rate of $3.43 for every $1,000 worth of property, representing a three cent increase from last year, the board of assessors said. The tax rate is still subject to final approval from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

The selectmen also received copies of Tom Dunlop’s new book about the Chappaquiddick ferry, The Chappy Ferry Book, from publisher Jan Pogue and ferry owner Peter Wells, who asked the selectmen to declare July 1 Chappy Ferry Day. Ms. Pogue proposed hanging a rain-proof banner at Memorial Wharf — not at the town’s expense — in conjunction with a two-week exhibit of pictures and artwork. “We think this is a win-win for everybody,” she said.

Selectman Michael Donaroma noted that the board has been reluctant to dedicate such days in the past. The board will vote on the idea at their next meeting on May 29.

“I’m just thrilled—I can’t wait to take a look at [the book],” selectman Art Smadbeck said. After the meeting, all three selectmen started flipping through the pages.
