A Vineyard Haven man already facing rape charges in Dukes County superior court was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday for allegedly soliciting the murder of a district attorney.

David L. Thrift was indicted Wednesday by the grand jury on two counts of solicitation to commit a felony as well as charges of aggravated rape of a child and aggravated rape of a child with force.

According to the indictment filed Wednesday in Dukes County superior court, in November 2011 Mr. Thrift solicited Joseph D’Amelio, a fellow inmate at the Edgartown house of correction, to murder a district attorney as well as one of his alleged victims, a minor.

Mr. D’Amelio was sentenced in October 2011 to two and a half years in prison for trafficking in Oxycodone.

The original rape charges against Mr. Thrift, 30, stem from July 2011, when he allegedly assaulted his wife and then fled his Vineyard Haven house, later returning and raping a 15-year-old female visitor at knifepoint.

An October trial date was already scheduled for Mr. Thrift, who is facing 10 charges: rape of a child with force, aggravated rape, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, violation of an abuse prevention order, three charges of assault and battery and two charges of intimidation of a witness.

Mr. Thrift has been incarcerated since his arrest, and has not yet been arraigned on the new charges.
