There will be dancing, drumming and an afternoon of fun for the family to enjoy. The entire Vineyard community is invited to attend on the grounds of the tribal building on Black Brook Road.

The Tribal After School Program had a fun-filled week during school vacation with West Basin cleanup for Earth Day, Quahog Day at the Mashpee Tribe, a visit to Gus Ben David’s animal kingdom, a return visit to Felix Neck, a tour of the winter flounder program at the tribal hatchery, and making pizza with Julianne Vanderhoop at the Orange Peel Bakery. Thank you to Laura Edelman, Kitty Hendricks and Allison Colarusso of the Education Department for their guidance in providing such interesting activities.

The Aquinnah Public Library will celebrate Mother’s Day all day on Saturday, May 12. The children will learn to make traditional May baskets with paper flowers. Bring mom with you and she can browse the collection of the latest books, videos and magazines while you are making her a present.

Rya Baird, daughter of George Baird and Alyson Woollacott, and grand-daughter of Al and Jill Woollacott, as well as Janice Sylvia and John Baird, has spent the past year applying to and interviewing at several schools and then preparing for and taking entrance examinations. After receiving several acceptance letters, she has decided upon Tabor Academy. Her five day orientation will be in August on the Tabor Boy schooner and she will begin ninth grade in September. The Baird and Woollacott families are very proud of Rya’s accomplishments.

Congratulations and all the best to Simon Bollin, who has been chosen as the new Aquinnah Fire Chief. He will officially be sworn in on May 1. Simon is the third great grandson of Samuel Flanders, who once served as the Gay Head Lighthousekeeper. Already the Aquinnah Firefighters roster is up to 11 and will continue to grow with at least all of Simon’s Aquinnah cousins participating.

Our Up-Island Council on Aging Director Joyce Bowker will be observing her 25th year of meeting the needs of our elders in Aquinnah, Chilmark and West Tisbury on May 1. Our condolences to Joyce and her daughter, Greyson, in the loss of their father/grandfather this past week.

Get well wishes to Edward Fantasia, who has been a patient at Children’s Hospital for the past two weeks.

Sincerest condolences to the family, friends and Chilmark community in the passing of Mildred Mayhew this week. Mildred was a well-respected teacher and then principal at the Menemsha School who touched the lives of many over her decades as an educator. She became the teacher of the Gay Head students who transferred to Chilmark when their school closed in 1966. Mildred’s service on Monday afternoon was certainly a testament to her and her community involvement. She is survived by her son Ted and his wife Judy, their daughter Sarah and her husband Charles Shipway IV and their son Tyler, and Rebecca and her husband Michael Hewitt. She is also survived by her daughter Carol Mays and her husband James, their daughters Cindy and Terri, and their families of Londonderry, N.H.

Dan Sauer, his wife, Wenonah Madison, and their sons, Waylon and Amos, returned home over the weekend after spending a week in Mexico attending a Sauer family reunion — swimming in caves, gastronomic delights, friendly locals attending to their needs, lots of laughter and fun for all. For now, though, it is time for their takeout eatery, 7a, to be in full swing for the summer season.

Woody and Jamie Vanderhoop returned home on Tuesday evening after spending the past 10 days in Hawaii visiting several islands and his cousins, Amy Vanderhoop and her husband Patrick Conley, as well as Emily Vanderhoop.

Sincerest condolences to Frederick and Janette Zwicky in the passing of their mother, Elaine “Susie” Zwicky, who passed away on April 21, just 13 days after her husband, Dr. Gary Zwicky, passed away in Oak Park, Ill. Elaine and her Holmes and Merrill families were longtime summer residents of Lobsterville. Her grandfather, the late Reverend Charles Merrill, served nearly a decade as a Baptist minister on the Vineyard.
