Well, the first full day of spring was Wednesday. Old man winter left us a “calling card” Sunday morning with a white frost. The snowfall total for the fall and winter was less than 10 inches and the snow did not linger for any great amount of time. There were only a few days when it was just plain miserable out. This will go down in the records as one of the warmest winters ever. The last day of winter we had a temperature of 72 degrees!
Kristin Buck, of State Road, reports that her daughter, Alice Anne Smith, had a wonderful second birthday celebration recently. Her sister made her a cake that looked like a monkey. Curious George is one of her favorites. It was very special because she was able to celebrate with both sets of her grandparents. Her folks, Herman and Marilyn Buck, of Stormville, N.Y., were here for a two week visit and thoroughly enjoyed the time they had with their youngest grandchild.
Tara Whiting, town clerk, reports that today is the last day to register for the annual town election. The office will be open until 8 p.m. Any questions, please call the town clerk at 696-0148. Copies of the town meeting warrant are available online, or feel free to stop by the town hall and pick one up. Jen Rand, town administrator, reports that the town has openings on the following boards or committees: parks and recreation, historic district commission, Island Housing Trust and the affordable housing committee.
Coco Brown, of Buttonwood Farm Road, returned home recently after a 15 day trip to Scotland. She reports that she really enjoyed the trip, would like to go back, and is urging her mother to come along.
Anna Alley, of State Road, went up to East Taunton to be with her grandson, Robbie, and his parents for St. Patrick’s Day. Sam and I held down the fort and he took me out for dinner on Saturday.
Sal Laterra, of Providence, R.I., spent the weekend with Phyllis Meras at her home. He worked all weekend in her flower beds and returned home on Monday to rest.
Jennifer Tseng, over at the library, reminds everyone that the last mystery movie for this month is Dial M for Murder. The screening begins at 7 p.m. Also, the JC Trio will be playing jazz favorites in the library today at 4 p.m.
You are invited to a public forum about the latest designs for library expansion and renovation on Monday, March 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the Howes House. Meet the architects, engineers and project manager. There will be an article on this year’s town meeting warrant and a ballot question at the election asking voters for the town share of the building cost. Both must be approved for the project to go ahead. If they are approved, construction will start in fall of this year and the renovated, expanded library will reopen about 14 months later. During construction, the library plans to operate out of temporary quarters.
Stephanie Dreyer, librarian over at the school, reports that the school library is delighted to be partnering with Bunch of Grapes for an in-store Book Fair from April 5 through April 15 this year. There will be a kick-off event on the evening of April 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the store. Guest authors will be there, as will your Island school librarians. Come out and support this local event! Visit Bunch of Grapes during that time period, choose books from upstairs, and mention West Tisbury as your school of choice when you make your purchase. On March 31 Stephanie will put away her books and put on her riding helmet instead. She says the Martha’s Vineyard Horse Council is in need of helpers to remove the show jumps and dressage ring from the Agricultural Society barn on March 31. Kathy Lobb reports that the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society will host its annual potluck dinner and social hour on Saturday, March 31 at 6 p.m. in their hall on Panhandle Road. Music will be provided and all are welcome, just bring a covered dish along with you.
The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative’s second annual Job Shadow Day will be broadcast tonight on MVTV channel 13 at 6:30 p.m. The Leadership Initiative is grateful to all those who shadowed young people, from a green architect, green engineer, doctor, nurse, physical therapist, a global economist and international relations manager, environmental scientist, farmer and even a small farm lobbyist.
On March 24, 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Horace Athearn, of Crow Hollow, received word from their youngest son, Cpl. Clifton H. Athearn, telling them of his safe arrival in France. They had two other sons in the service, Lieut. Elmer W. Athearn of the Engineers’ aviation battalion who was stationed somewhere in the South Pacific and Sgt. Leonard B. Athearn of the Air Transport Command who was stationed in India.
