Spring has arrived in Aquinnah — the osprey are at their Lobsterville nest, the pinkletinks are in full chorus across town, the daffodils are in bloom, squirrels are in abundance, as are the rabbits. The fog has lifted and the sun is shining with temperatures in the 60s this week.

The Aquinnah Public Library has a wonderful schedule of activities for the next few weeks. On Tuesday, March 27 at 3 p.m. children and their parents will enjoy Cat’s Cradle at the library. On Thursday, March 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. there will be a movie for adults with popcorn and cider provided. They’re still deciding on the film title. On Saturday, April 7 there will be a Spring Festival at the library. Kids can plant seeds. There will be an egg hunt without candy at 10:30 a.m. — lots of fun, snacks, crafts, and seed planting. For further information, please call director Cathy Thompson at 508-645-2314.

Friends of Aquinnah Public Library are presently fund-raising for the purpose of becoming members of the CLAMS (Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing) network. The current system has become obsolete. Nearly 20 years ago, the library trustees were interested in the CLAMS system, yet it never materialized for the library at that time. As a member of CLAMS, we would have access to the 1.5 million in holdings (books, DVDs, audio books, etc.) and a new circulation system. After viewing several systems, it was determined that CLAMS would be the best choice and compatible with Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and West Tisbury libraries. However, the Friends must raise $20,000 by July 1. Any contribution will be very much appreciated — all gifts are tax deductible. Checks may be sent to: Friends of Aquinnah Public Library, 65 State Road, Aquinnah, MA 02535. Thank you.

The Rev. Ellen Tatreau would like to remind everyone of the Lenten schedule for the Community Baptist Church of Gay Head. On April 1 at 9 a.m. there will be a Palm Sunday worship service. All are welcome to attend any and all of the worship services Please feel free to have flowers on the altar in honor of or in memory of your family members if you would like. The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living Board of Directors would like to thank Mia Benedetto and Amalie Tinus, both seniors at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, for volunteering at the Supportive Day Program. Both have very full schedules at school and yet enjoy their time as volunteers with the elders of the Vineyard community. Thank you!

Get well wishes to Kristina Leslie, who was discharged from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital over the weekend and is recuperating and resting comfortably at home.

Shaun MacPhail, Alexandra Taylor and their daughters, Olive and Violet, returned recently from a two week visit in the Bahamas with parents and grandparents, Captain Hugh and Jeanne Taylor. Olive and Violet enjoyed sailing with their grandfather, Captain Hugh, and lots of beach time and swimming with grandmother, Jeanne.

Jenna Petersiel was the guest over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend of Shaun and Alexandra. Jenna is preparing for her third summer season at the Chilmark Tavern. We will look forward to her return to residing across the way.

Condolences to the family and many friends of Lenny Reid, R.N., whom I have known for nearly four decades when he and his friend Rick Lambos fished on the Vineyard prior to starting their careers at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Lenny and I were coworkers at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital working in adjoining departments. He was known for his calming demeanor, his wisdom, his integrity, his professionalism, his humor, his compassion, his creativity and artistic skills, and for the love of his family. He will be greatly missed across the Vineyard.

Condolences to the family and friends of Phyllis Gonsalves Rogers, who passed away on March 16 at Massachusetts General Hospital. She was a descendant of the Haskins family of what was once Gay Head.

Julianne Vanderhoop would like to remind everyone that now that spring is here, her Orange Peel Bakery will be serving pizza on Saturday afternoons from noon to 2 p.m. Stop by this Saturday, depending on the weather. Her schedule will be announced beforehand.

From the Vineyard Gazette files of March 21, 1952: After being postponed twice, Wednesday because of the snow and Friday because of the town meeting, the Aquinnah Club met at Mrs. Charles W. Ryan’s Saturday, with nine members present. It was work night, and many an X-ray cape was made for the hospital, but the chore was not finished. Mrs. Ryan served refreshments and the club adjourned at 11 o’clock.
