Shark fins and fans are returning to Vineyard waters this summer. But before they get here a noted scientist will be making her way to the Island to educate us on what we can do to save these misunderstood, threatened animals.

Marine conservation biologist Samantha Whitcraft will speak at public schools and present two free public sessions on March 13 and 14 that explain the importance of sharks to marine life, dispel shark myths and suggest ways that children and adults can protect sharks.

Ms. Whitcraft is a member of the group Shark Savers, and has worked with sharks and other marine animals at the New England Aquarium and Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.

Ms. Whitcraft will visit the Oak Bluffs, Edgartown and Tisbury schools on Monday, March 12. On Tuesday, March 13 she will hold sessions at the West Tisbury, Chilmark and charter schools. Free public sessions will be held at 12:10 p.m. at the rotary club and at 3 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum.

The Shark Savers talks serve as the kickoff to JAWSFEST’s Summer for the Sharks initiative, the goal of which is to raise awareness and funds for shark conservation. JAWSFEST, a three-day event exploring the filming, experiences and memories from the making of JAWS on Martha’s Vineyard, will be held August 9 through 12.
