The last Vineyard team standing in the postseason, the boys’ basketball squad, took one step closer to being the last team standing in the state on Wednesday evening, defeating Westwood 89-69 in Taunton in the semifinal round of the MIAA Division 3 South Section Tournament.

With the win, the boys improve their season record to 21-2 and advance to the South Section finals, which will be played this Saturday at UMass-Boston at noon. They take on undefeated, number-one-seed Wareham. The Vineyarders are seeded number two.

Though the team ended the night 20 points ahead of their opponents, the Vineyarders led by only six points at the half, hampered by rebound troubles.

“Their intensity was greater than ours in the first half,” head coach Mike Joyce summed up after the game. “But the [Vineyard] defense really stepped up in the second.”

Senior Peter Keaney, usually seen wreaking havoc on the offensive side of things, made his presence most known on defense, with seven rebounds, three steals and 12 points scored.

Junior Jack Roberts led the Vineyard scoring with 27 points, including 3 three-pointers. Of equal importance to the points tally was Roberts’s timing.

“Jack had three or four big shots for us when we needed them,” coach Joyce said.

Senior Izak Browne turned in 16 points (two 3-pointers) with 6 rebounds, while seniors Will Stewart and Ryan Fisher had 9 each. Seniors Charlie Everett and Del Araujo each scored 8 points.

The last time the Vineyard advanced to the sectional finals was almost 40 years ago, according to coach Joyce.
