The Coast Guard terminated the voyage of an Edgartown-based fishing vessel on Tuesday after multiple safety violations were discovered.

According to Coast Guard officials, the 40-foot fishing vessel Sea Raven did not have enough safety gear required to operate the vessel outside a three-nautical-mile line bordering federal waters. The violations included insufficient immersion suits and an unserviceable life ring.

At the time the Sea Raven was boarded, it was located four miles east of Cape Pogue.

The Coast Guard crew escorted the fishing vessel to state waters off Martha’s Vineyard.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, Coast Guard officials also boarded a Woods Hole–based fishing vessel located off the coast of New Jersey. Coast Guard official terminated that vessel’s voyage after determining the 78-foot vessel lacked proper safety gear.

“These guys are our fellow mariners and that’s why we do these boardings,” said Lt. Joe Klinker, 1st Coast Guard District public affairs officer. “As the winter weather approaches, and the busy season demands catch, these ‘little’ issues can mean the difference between life and death.”
