So, Mother Nature did some housecleaning this past weekend. We had one large branch that went thud in the night. It was big enough that the highway department had a man with a chainsaw to clean it up. I am thankful that Islanders weren’t among those who lost their power for many days.
Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Tobias Russell Schaeffer, who celebrated his day Oct. 29; Joshua Brown, Oct. 31; Thiago Muniz, Nov. 2 and to Andrew DeOliveira, who celebrates his day today, Nov. 4.
I hope you all survived the goblins at Halloween. It was a quiet night and the school was buzzing with their party. I heard the fire station’s haunted cave was a success.
Did you miss seeing the scarecrows from the charter school scarecrow festival? The scarecrows have moved from their businesses across the Island to meet on the porch of the Mansion House until Sunday, Nov. 6!
The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will hold its annual meeting on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Tisbury Senior Center. Following a brief business meeting, the board will make a presentation reflecting briefly where they were in 2009, what’s changed, what they have accomplished and their exciting plans to move forward to 2014 and beyond. The future is full of promise with even greater changes and accomplishments ahead. They want the community to come and appreciate a bit of the history about the Center for Living and to hear the progress and plans for the future and what it will mean to 55-plus Islanders and the general population on the Vineyard. Refreshments will be served.
The Museum is welcoming author Chip Bishop to the Vineyard to discuss his great-great uncle’s friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt and Vineyarder George Washington Goethals. After years of research exploring the relationship between the three individuals, Bishop has published their story in The Lion and the Journalist.
The Lion and the Journalist author talk will be held on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the museum library, 59 School street. Admission is $8 for members and $12 for nonmembers. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
This Saturday, Nov. 5, 5:30 p.m. at the P.A. Club, the Touchdown Club will hold a dinner and auction. Come and have a great time and support the team. The fee is $15 at the door and includes the silent auction, appetizers, dinner, dessert and auction. Start your holiday shopping and help support our kids.
This is the time of year it gets a little sad around the nursery. The perennials go back to the farm to be recultivated; the annuals will become compost to help next year’s plants and the bushes will be tended to for the winter. However, the bright side is that while the changeover activity is going on, we are expecting the greens and trees for Christmas in a couple of weeks. It doesn’t seem possible, but it is time for wreath-making and decorating the area for the holidays.
In the six years that I have worked for Donaroma’s, it never ceases to amaze me, the transformation that we make from season to season. I think this is my favorite (I think I say that every season), as we are once again going to decorate the outside and put up the Island trees around the pergola, and the magic will begin.
It is time to fall back, so don’t forget to set your clocks back this weekend. We get an extra hour of sleep on Sunday.
