Most people watch Sesame Street and think how wonderful it is. Others watch it and wish they could join in on the fun. But Kevin Clash fell so much in love he eventually became its leading light. Mr. Clash is the creator of Elmo.

On Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey is being screened at the Katharine Cornell Theatre located at 54 Spring street in Vineyard Haven. The documentary follows the journey of young Mr. Clash first dreaming of working with his idol, Muppet creator Jim Henson, to eventually working for Sesame Street and creating the character of Elmo, along with Hoots the Owl and Baby Natasha and attaining the title of puppet coordinator and Muppet Captain.

The documentary includes rare footage and interviews with Frank Oz (Miss Piggy) Cheryl Henson and many, many others in the Muppet world.

The documentary won the special jury prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and as Jada Yuan wrote in New York Magazine, “It is impossible to come out of this documentary about Kevin Clash, the man behind Elmo, without wanting to hug someone.”

The movie is rated a delight for all ages, so feel free to bring the kids.
