The Community Baptist Church of Gay Head and First Baptist Church of Vineyard Haven will join for worship on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. at the Community Baptist Church on Church street in Aquinnah. Former regional high schoolmate Cookie Gazaille Perry will be delighted to assist you with a dried fall arrangement before the holiday guests arrive. On Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. at the Anchors in Edgartown, Cookie will assist with your decorating skills. Please bring your favorite basket, box or other container and she will supply the decorations. The cost is $12 for each participant.
The Aquinnah Public Library will be conducting a special How Are We Doing? survey for library users during the month of November. Catherine Thompson, library director, would like feedback and comments on the following topics: If you found what you wanted in the library, if the service was good, if you are satisfied with the collection and the service offered, and comments on anything one would do differently. Your participation is encouraged.
There will be a flea market on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. There will be many great vendors with an array of antiques, books, jewelry, handmade creations, collectibles, clothing, linens, Vineyard collectibles and much more. The indoor Farmers’ Market was a lot of fun this past Saturday. If you found two of Emily Fischer’s goat’s milk soaps on your table in a bag with garlic and other things, please leave a message at the above number. The next indoor Farmers’ Market will be held at the Aggricultural Hall on Panhandle Road on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a hot lunch served by Little Rock Farm (by the way, the pumpkin pie and whipped cream were extraordinary). The market will feature end-of-season vegetables from local gardens, jams and jellies by three of the best preservists, Emily’s goat’s milk soap, fresh flowers still in season, Susan Silva’s dried floral arrangements, and much more. Music, lunch by the fireplace, what more would you ask for on a brisk autumn day?
The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will hold their annual meeting on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Tisbury Senior Center. The general meeting will take place at 7 p.m. with a presentation on our work and accomplishments over the past year. A brief business meeting will follow. Refreshments will be served with coffee. Please consider serving as a member or perhaps as a valued volunteer for special projects. MVC4L is still seeking three additional board members from Aquinnah and four from Chilmark. If you would like to learn more, please attend the annual meeting and meet the present board members.
Safe journey home to Charlotte Cook and her husband, Craig, as they head west this week. We enjoyed a gastronomic delight on Friday evening at Menemsha Café — an incredibly delicious dinner by Josh Aronie, assisted by Alex Mayhew and staff. Get there early on Friday evening for a fantastic dinner.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Geraldine Dean, longtime summer resident of Lighthouse Road, who died on Oct. 13. She and her husband, Thomas, celebrated their 57th anniversary on August 7. She was a great supporter of the Aquinnah Public Library. Mrs. Dean is survived by her husband and their children, Thomas, Brian, Leslie, and Cynthia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Madeleine, Connor, and Piper, as well as by her sister, Patricia Kelleher. Services were held near her home in Rye, New York.
Congratulations to Ella Mahoney and her Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School girls’ field hockey team on their win against Falmouth on Wednesday, 1-0. Chantal Booker and Faith Smalley are members of the high school junior varsity field hockey team and lost to Falmouth on Wednesday 1-0 but were encouraged as they had a great season, losing very few games.
Arlen Roth and his daughter, Lexie, were in New York this past week to celebrate the 100th birthday of father and grandfather, Al Ross (birth name Abraham Roth). Al Ross was a former senior cartoonist at The New Yorker for more than 70 years and is presently cared for in an assisted living facility. Happy 100th !!
Congratulations to Aquinnah special police officer Erika Weron and Phillip Fuentes on the birth of their son, Dominic West Fuentes, on Oct. 20 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Dawn Widdiss returned to her home in Framingham on Monday after spending the weekend with her mother, Gladys Widdiss, and an early birthday celebration with her brothers, Carl and Donald, in attendance. Gladys enjoyed more cake on Wednesday with balloons, games, and ice cream for all. She received many beautiful floral bouquets, cards, and a very pretty autumn basket.
The autumn season in Aquinnah has allowed us to enjoy quite a few days of warm weather and sunshine with a day of rain on occasion. The lawns are getting more green each day, so much that Forrest Alley had to mow one more time for the season and the rhododendrons at the church are ready to bloom. Two sections of Lighthouse Road have recently been paved by White-Lynch who have also been paving a section of Old South Road and installed pipes for culverts to prevent those major washouts. Of interest to many, the home of the late Fred Simmons is being demolished, the old Gay Head Diner was moved over to Lobsterville Road this month, and Kathy Corjulo’s new home is nearing completion. The Orange Peel Bakery pizza nights have ended for the season but please stop by for baked goods over the winter.
Belated happy 90th birthday wishes to George White who celebrated on Oct. 27 with a party attended by family and friends, and a special visit from his daughter, Wendy White Stone of Alabama.
