Sengekontacket Pond reopened for all shellfishing over the weekend. The pond had remained closed to clamming and quahaugging at the outset of the recreational bay scallop season on Oct. 1 after state fisheries officials said additional testing was required. The large saltwater pond spanning the towns of Oak Bluffs and Edgartown has been the subject of state-mandated summer closures for the last four years due to high bacterial counts. The pond reopened Saturday, and with summer-like temperatures over the Columbus Day weekend, recreational shellfishermen wearing waders and also just bathing suits dotted the pond at low tide in the late afternoon.
