Vineyard Haven has a new harbor master boat. Built in Texas, the $265,306, 28-foot high-speed boat was paid for through a federal grant awarded two years ago from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The new boat rolled off the ferry Island Home into town on Monday afternoon. Harbor master Jay Wilbur said he is delighted.

The boat arrived on the same day that Mr. Wilbur hosted his annual Cape and Islands Harbor Masters Association dinner at the Black Dog Tavern. Harbor masters from Chatham, Westport and Hingham attended. Hingham harbor master Kenneth R. Corson 3rd brought his town’s new high-speed boat.

The new Vineyard Haven boat has an unpainted, dull aluminum color. Mr. Wilbur said the metal is high grade, chosen for its resistance to seawater and requires no painting. The boat is powered by two 250-horsepower Mercury outboard motors. “She can do 50 mph,” Mr. Wilbur said.

The boat also has firefighting equipment aboard. A water gun just above the cabin is capable of delivering 500 gallons a minute. After the boat had been in the water for barely three hours, Mr. Wilbur demonstrated the firefighting capabilities by shooting a stream of water across the harbor.
