As the fall season begins, we are thankful for all of our summer memories. September is slipping away as quick as you can say Jack Frost! We know he is waiting just around the corner but it doesn’t seem possible with this beautiful Indian summer weather we are having. As the leaves are just beginning to turn, folks have harvested the last of their vegetables from their gardens, and some berries, not as many as last year, are set for canning. And we have slowly settled into our fall routine as the sun is now setting around 6:30 p.m. Last Saturday, the last weekend of summer, about 30 weddings were held on the Island.

James and Diane Pagnotti of Old Forge, Pa, returned home last Saturday after spending a week on the Vineyard. Diane reports that they enjoyed the weather, beaches, dining out and traveling around the Island. They met up with old friends and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and may rent in Chilmark next season as it seemed more secluded and quiet.

Simi Horwitz of New York city visited friends in town on a brief vacation. She looks forward to returning soon. She is a features writer for the Backstage Daily newspaper.

Anna Alley, who had been ill with a strange virus for about a week, recovered just in time for her to fly out to California to be with her old college roommates and attend the annual AARP convention. Sam and I are holding down the fort.

Noah and Susan Block of Music street went down to New York city to celebrate their anniversary on Thursday. They return on Sunday.

Remember that the annual harvest festival will take place at the Agricultural Hall on Oct. 1. There will be a wide variety of agricultural events at the festival, including a special Farmers’ Market. It will conclude with a potluck supper at 6 p.m. with dancing until 10 p.m.

Also the antique power show starts at 9 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. George Hartman of Panhandle Road, known far and wide as the guru of steam engines, reports that this will be the Antique Power Association’s 23rd annual show at the Antique Power Museum in the Agricultural Society’s newest barn. All owners of old or not-so-old machinery (gas and steam engines, toys, cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors and machinery, rusty or otherwise) are invited. For more information, call him at 508-693-6039. The museum plans to run antique “hit and miss” gas engines, steam engines, and the 1902 Rambler replica car. Volunteers are needed to help set up on Friday afternoon. Last weekend George went off-Island to his last (for this season) antique engine show in Whately. The show is held at the local antique power museum and included some extremely rare early gas and steam engines. He finally got his oldest steam engine operational and ran it at this show for the first time. The engine came out of a Cincinnati, Ohio, textile mill and dates from the early 1840s. Also on display and running were two of the late Bill Honey’s best engines which have been restored by the museum and are on permanent display in his memory. George plans to run as many of them as possible during the Oct. 1 show.

Cycle Martha’s Vineyard will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1. The 100k route circumnavigates the Island traveling along the ocean, Nantucket Sound and state forest. The 50k route offers views of the sound and the ocean. It is sponsored by the Rotary Club with proceeds to benefit their charities.

On Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. the Boston String Quartet will present WorldSong at the Chilmark Community Church. This event was scheduled for late August, but Irene made them change the plan.
