Fall isn’t here yet officially, but when I walked outside today I smelled the smell. It was the smell of raking leaves, many helped off the tree by Irene. I for one love the cool air and blue sky that comes along with fall.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Kiana Casey, who celebrated her day Sept. 11, and to Caroline Kelleher, who celebrated her day Sept. 14.

Happy birthday to Ted Morgan, who celebrated his 90th birthday on Sept. 12.

Ted was feted Saturday night at the Field Club by his family and friends. Ted and his wife of 66 years, Floss, were very proud that all six of their children were present. They each wished their father a happy birthday in their own words and of course added a little humor to each story. There was a TV on the wall that screened pictures of Ted through the years.

Along with his sons, Ted and his wife, Cindy, from New Orleans, La., and Tim and his wife, Marty, from San Antonio, Tex., many friends flew in for the occasion. These included John and Piper Kirkendoll, Al and Theresa Kinkendoll, Tommy Smegal and Toni Tanner, Jane and Jack Finn, Deuce and Coleen Rando, and Gary Solomon.

It was a great night, and we wish Ted a very happy birthday — here is to many more.

Congratulations to Debbie Manley and John Smith, who were united in marriage on Sept. 14 at the home of Tony Bettencourt and Rhonda Fauteux, Debbie’s sister. John’s daughters, Lindsey and Meredith, were here for the occasion and all of John’s sisters and brother and Debbie’s sisters and brothers attended as well. Congratulations to you both, and here is to many happy years together.

Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard will have Handmade from the Heart again this Christmas season and we would like to invite all local artisans and bakers to contribute to this holiday fundraiser for Hospice. The organization is seeking any unique, handmade items, including jewelry, needlepoint, knitted items, paintings, photographs, and more. The items will be sold at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House in Edgartown on Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone interested in donating to Handmade from the Heart can call Terre Young at the Hospice office 508-693-0189.

The Martha’s Vineyard Ecumenical Youth Group is kicking off the school year with a southern dinner and auction on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Federated Church in Edgartown. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. at no charge, followed by a live auction and a slide show presentation of the mission work done in Tennessee last June by the youth group. Everyone is invited to share a meal and learn about the work done by our youth.

An Electronic Disposal Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, across from the regional high school. Round up all your old toasters, hair dryers, refrigerators, tape recorders —any appliance — and drop it off for proper disposal and to benefit Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

This week was a very emotional week for everyone. But once again we all stood together as proud Americans and showed our pride in our country by paying tribute to those families who lost their loved ones on 9/11. All the tributes were beautiful, emotional and meaningful. We will never forget that day and all those who then and now serve to protect us.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
