Dragonfly Fine Arts Gallery will host a Plein Air Invitational Painting Derby from Sept. 1 through Sept. 25 with a reception on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The Plein Air Derby runs in a similar fashion to the annual Martha’s Vineyard Fishing Derby. Honest. Featured artists from both on and off-Island have been invited to participate and bring in their “catch” or painting of the day. The artists fan out across the Island to suggested sites to capture the spirit and light of September on the Vineyard. Artists are also free to choose their own favorite spots. Sort of like secret fishing holes, if you will.

At the end of each day during the invitational, artists will bring their daily catch back to the gallery for display and sale. Each artist is limited to one catch per day in several tackle categories which include oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor.

Island artists include Marjorie Mason, Thaw Malin, Nancy Furino, Don McKillop, Traeger diPietro and others.

Painting Derby entry fees from the artists and a portion of the Gallery sales proceeds will be donated to Featherstone Center for the Arts.

Dragonfly Fine Arts Gallery is located at 91 Dukes County avenue in the Arts District of Oak Bluffs and is open seven days from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
