Four beaches in Oak Bluffs have been closed to swimming as of Wednesday morning, after fresh water testing showed unacceptably high bacteria levels.

Pay Beach, Inkwell Beach, Eastville Beach and Madeiros Cove on Barnes Road are closed.

State Beach is open for swimming,

West Tisbury beaches are open. Beaches there also had been closed last week but fresh tests showed the water was safe from high levels of enterococcus bacteria.

Oak Bluffs health agent Shirley Fauteax is taking more samples today for testing; results are expected tomorrow.

Beaches in Tisbury, Edgartown, Chilmark and Aquinnah have remained open.

No illness has been reported in connection with the high bacteria counts in some Island waters. Enterococcus bacteria can pose a health risk to young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.

With the extremely hot weather the commonwealth is experiencing, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is advising people to avoid strenuous activity, drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty, limit dehydrating alcohol intake, seek relief in air-conditioned centers such as libraries and theatres, and never to leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
