West Tisbury beaches, including Lambert’s Cove Beach and Long Point, are all open to swimming again as of Tuesday afternoon.

Several beaches had been closed last week after routine water testing showed elevated levels of enterococcus bacteria.

West Tisbury health agent John Powers has been testing Lambert’s Cove Beach daily. He told today’s Gazette that as soon as five consecutive results came through with appropriately low levels, the beach would be reopened to swimming. The town has confirmed that it is open again. Seth’s Pond and Salt Works at Seven Gates already had been reopened for bathers.

Chris Kennedy of The Trustees of Reservations confirmed that Long Point also was reopened.

Most Oak Bluffs beaches which had been closed were opened to swimming again over the weekend. Madeiros Cove, on the lagoon, remains closed.

Beaches in Tisbury, Edgartown, Chilmark and Aquinnah have remained open.

Through the closures in West Tisbury and Oak Bluffs, no illness has been reported in connection with the high bacteria counts in the water. Enterococcus bacteria can pose a health risk to young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.
