Chilmark moves along through wonderful hot summer days. It rains at night and the summer days are long and steamy, just what is wanted for a day at the beach! There are so many activities scheduled for the evenings that no doubt folks are enjoying a nap at the beach these days.

The town celebrated the opening of the repaired and rebuilt dock on the anniversary of the devastating fire of one year ago. Lots of folks turned out for the speeches, food and general good cheer. Many heroes of that day were remembered and their efforts were appreciated.

Congratulations to Mildred Mayhew, who became a great-great-grandmother this month when Jack and Jessica Callahan had Liam on July 6. Liam is also the grandson of Carol and Jim Mays of Londonderry, N.H. The Callahans live in Manchester, N.H. Congratulations to all!

Elmore and Vonda Mayhew enjoyed a visit from Elmore’s son, Stephen, and his family this week.

Catha Day of New York city was at her Peaked Hill home this week and entertained her sister, Elizabeth Churchill, and her children, Lucy, Bobby and Freddy, all of Los Angeles.

Wally Epstein’s family held the fourth annual Cousin Camp at their Menemsha home last week. Cuda and Zoe Zmuda and Jacob and Ben Epstein all enjoyed five days with no parents. A good time was had by all!

Linda Levy of Chilmark will speak at the West Tisbury Library on July 21 about her new novel, A Kingdom of Madness.

Bob and Anne Ganz are here for their annual vacation from Washington, D.C. While here this summer, they will host the dogs of their West Coast children.

Congratulations from us all to Donald and Ann Brown of Middle Road and Washington, D.C., who are celebrating their 53rd anniversary this week.

Butch and Kathy Scheufele of Duxbury are here for a Chilmark vacation with their daughter, Jessica, and her husband, Jake Ward, of Washington, D.C. They are excited to have their new grandson, Grayson Quinn Ward, here for his first Chilmark visit. He is four months old. The family is at the Young home on South Road where they have vacationed for many summers.

Kerin Mosiere of Melbourne, Australia, finished her United States visit with a return to Chilmark to spend a long weekend with her Mosher family, with whom she is recently reconnected. She was in New York city last month to greet her first grandchild, Victoria Jacobs, born in that city.

The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club will meet at the Old Mill building in West Tisbury on July 19. The speaker will be Don Sibley talking about bonsai plants. Please call the hotline at 508-693-5334 for more information.

Allan and Anne Davey and their sons, Benjamin and Jason, have returned to their Vineyard Haven home after a week at their cottage on Larsen Lane.

Jules Worthington will have some of his recent paintings at the Sovereign Bank in Chilmark from July 15 to 22. He will show five of his historical paintings of Menemsha. The artist’s reception will be Friday, July 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the bank.

Some of us remember Mabel Look, who died recently in Connecticut. She was buried at Abel’s Hill Cemetery on July 14. Mabel grew up in Chilmark, the daughter of Henry and Eva Look of Chilmark. She lived off-Island for many years.

Jonathan Neumann and his children, Samona and Elijah, are here from Portland, Ore., for their annual vacation. Jon is the son of Conrad and Jane Neumann of Durham and Menemsha.

The Chilmark Public Library programs for this week are as follows: On Wednesday, July 29, Purdue University geophysicist Andy Freed will talk about the earthquake and tsunami at Tohoku, Japan, in 2011. Andy is an experienced geophysicist who was on site in Haiti shortly after that earthquake. He is the son of Norman and Diana Freed of Chilmark. The program begins at 5:30 p.m.

Cookbook author Joan Nathan will speak on Thursday, July 21, at the library about her search for Jewish cooking in France. The program will begin at 5 p.m.

Chilmark week will be July 18 through 22 at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum with free admission to all seasonal and year-round Chilmark residents. The museum is featuring a program called Your Town, Our Island. Discounts will be offered on memberships also. The museum is located in Edgartown. Please call 617-778-4258 for more information.
