Aquinnah artist Noah Mayrand opened his show, Off-Island: Images of Four Years Exploring the Mainland, at Featherstone on Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs on Thursday. Noah recently graduated with a BFA from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Tufts University. His show will run through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. each day. Please stop by and enjoy his images in both photography and ink prints.

The annual Holy Ghost Feast will be held this weekend at the Portuguese-American Club on Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs. Saturday is a grand time for the entire family to enjoy the sights and sounds, the auction, the foods and especially the friends you will see. Sunday will feature the parade winding through the streets of Oak Bluffs in honor of Queen Isabella. Her benevolence is still present in the many charitable acts performed by the members of the P.A. Club, including the scholarships they present each year. Hope to see you there.

At the Aquinnah Cultural Center this week, Durwood Vanderhoop demonstrated the new tradition of layering powdered clay into glass vessels as decorative display pieces on Wednesday. On Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the annual Zuni Fetish show and sale will be held. Stop by and purchase one of the spirited hand-carved precious stone animal pieces. Massachusetts Society of Genealogists President Patricia Stano-Carpenter will present Getting into Genealogy on Saturday, July 16 at 4 p.m. at the West Tisbury Library. Admission is free.

The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Initiative will celebrate the life of Walter Cronkite on Sunday, July 17 at 5 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. Presentation of the second annual Walter Cronkite awards will be presented by his daughter, Kathy Cronkite.

Aquinnah author Phil Weinstein will present Faulkner Stumbles Into Fame at the Aquinnah town hall on Tuesday, July 19 from 5 to 6 p.m. Phil is a professor of English at Swarthmore and has shared his writings in Aquinnah and at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore. Phil and his wife, Penny, are at their Aquinnah home for the summer. Refreshments will be served.

Thank you to Vineyard author Geraldine Brooks for her presentation on July 12 for the Aquinnah Public Library. There was standing room only in the Aquinnah town hall. Thank you to Geraldine for bringing the memory of Caleb to life after more than 300 years with her extensive historical research for Caleb’s Crossing.

West Tisbury author David McCullough will speak on Wednesday, July 20 at 8 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall on Panhandle Road for the benefit of the West Tisbury Library Capital Campaign. Tickets are $35 for the event, An Evening with David McCullough.

Vineyard author Susan Klein and photographer Alan Brigish will present Martha’s Vineyard Now & Zen for the Aquinnah Public Library at the Aquinnah town hall on Thursday, July 21 at 5 p.m. View the 130 images of their new video and learn more about Now & Zen. Refreshments will be served.

The Friends of Aquinnah Public Library will hold their annual meeting and reception on the library deck on Saturday, July 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

A memorial service will be held for the late Dorothy Wight Barker, who died on Jan. 21 at the age of 100. The service will be held at the Congregational Church in West Tisbury on Sunday, July 17 at 1 p.m. Her family looks forward to seeing her friends at the service which will be followed by a reception in the parish hall. She is survived by her brother, Brandon Wight, and by her daughters, Judith Lutender and her husband, Barry, and Karen Duffy and her husband, Richard, of Aquinnah and Florida, and their families.

Michelle Laurie, our assistant librarian at Aquinnah Public Library since July 2006 and a regular visitor since 1997, died on July 1 in Wayland, just a year after she first became ill. She was surrounded by family and had been regaled by visitors and messages from all over the country in the weeks just prior to her death. Many of her friends traveled from Aquinnah to visit with her at Massachusetts General Hospital, at Spaulding Rehab, and at the hospice facility. Notes of condolence may be mailed to her husband, Phil Robinson, at 10 Conway street, Roslindale, MA 02131 or to her parents, Shirley and Iain Laurie, and her brother Steve at 624 75th avenue, N.W., Calgary, Alberta T2K0P9 Canada. Michelle considered Aquinnah her home and a memorial gathering will be held in September at West Basin.

Tons of get well wishes to Lisa Ben David Scannell, who was injured recently in an accident with a horse. She has been hospitalized in Boston and is presently undergoing extensive medical care. Lisa and her family need your assistance in her recovery. There will be a spaghetti dinner donated by Marc Hanover of Linda Jean’s on Thursday, July 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Portuguese-American Club on Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs. Vineyard Gazette Chilmark columnist and Over South antique dealer Jane Slater is working on a show, Memories of the Mooncusser, and will be displaying her collection of memorabilia within the next few weeks at Over South. Oh, the memories!

Get well wishes to our up-Island friends and neighbors. Ozzie Fischer remains a patient at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Basil Welch is spending a couple of weeks in Windemere. They would both really appreciate a card while spending these hot summer days inside.

The old Gay Head Diner will be moved soon from its present location of more than six decades. Carl Widdiss is interested in finding any old photographs or articles on the diner which was once owned by the Grieder family.

Happy 54th anniversary wishes to Bob and Connie Iadicicco as they celebrate their special day on July 20.

Belated happy birthday wishes to Jan Haughton Tracy, who celebrated on July 13. Jan and her husband, Tom, are presently enjoying their summer sojourn at their family home Rockspring.
