Milestones

On the weekend of May 13 to 15, the Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard hosted approximately 200 active Rotarians at the annual district 7950 conference held at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown.

Worldwide eradication of polio continues to be the main thrust of Rotary International’s efforts to provide service above self, which is every Rotarian’s motto. A progress report was given by past district governor David Clifton of the Easton club. He is the polio plus coordinator for the district which covers all of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts including the Vineyard. It is one of 534 districts around the world.

The Vineyard club is recognized as one of the more active clubs globally as the result of the many projects they are involved in.

Here at home and worthy of note is the recent donation to the Island Food Pantry of $5,000 presented by charity committee chairman Bill Little to program director Armen Hanjian, a high point of the May conference.

In early spring, the Vineyard club adopted a new club project — the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund is a privately-run research effort to cure the disease that is a concern for the human condition worldwide. The mission is to fund research with the highest probability of slowing, stopping or reversing Alzheimer’s disease.

The combination of Rotary International and the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund represents a formidable opponent to the disease.
