The last teams standing in postseason play, girls’ and boys’ tennis, split their victories in the state tournament this week.

After reaching the finals of the MIAA South Section Tournament for the first time in coach Ned Fennessey’s 21-year tenure, the Vineyard boys are set for one last showdown with rival Cape Cod Academy. The match will be played at Marstons Mills, a neutral site, today at 3:30 p.m.

In the first two matches of the tournament, the boys swept both Ashland and Norwell, gritting it out against the former team while taking a relatively easy win in the semis. Senior captain Reid Yennie pushed through a two-and-a-half hour match against Ashland’s Ivan Bunin, dropping the first set 4-6 to come back and take the next two 6-4, 6-4. The number two doubles team of Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer also took their match to three sets.

By contrast, each player took his match in two sets against visiting Norwell to secure the team’s spot in the finals.

The girls traveled to Norwell Wednesday afternoon to compete in the semifinals of the MIAA tournament. Junior Alyssa Adler kept her season-long win streak alive despite slipping in her second set to take the match 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Alyssa was the lone victory of the day, however, with the Vineyarders falling 4-1.

Despite the loss, this season remains the team’s strongest yet, as they finish with a 16-4 record and a conference championship title.
