As I sit here writing this article there is a thunder and lightning storm going on, and I am wondering, “What am I doing sitting here on an electric device in this weather?”

But it is raining and that makes me smile, because as we all know, we need the rain.

Now we just need some relief of the humidity.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Elizabethe Dourian, who celebrated her day July 19; John Murray, July 20; Riley Craig and Shannon Morris, July 21; and to Abigail Lively, who celebrates her day today, July 23.

Well, all our company has gone. It was a great two weeks with friends and family.

The Stanleys made their way back to New Jersey and our cousins Lynn and Mike Kujan arrived from Finksburg, Md., with their four-legged children Tank, Tillie and Bonkers. Lynn’s sister and brother in law, Jenny and Nelson Furtado, came for three days to enjoy the beach and of course all the fine dining.

Then Mike, Abby, Fiona and Micela Brennan arrived from New York for a week.

It was busy, but it is always a fun time and pleasure to see them all, and it was our first time to meet Micela.

I haven’t mentioned the beach gang as we have not been out to the beach that often yet this summer. There is always something going on, or the weather is not that inviting to go. However, this past weekend a few of us made it out there, and it was everything we remember it being.

Andy and Shannon (Dolby) Smith were there with their children, Adie and first-time beachgoer Andrew Smith Jr.As I have always put it, our guarantee of the beach group continuing for a long time. We had a great day and as always the company was good.

We were very happy when Tracy and Spike Smith came out and joined us; their girls seem always busy with sports or horse shows on Sunday so it was a real treat.

Now we are looking forward for the coming weeks when more people will be out.

Jim Athearn is featured in the July 2010 issue of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine in an article titled The Athearn-Mayhew Feud, which explores some of the history of Simon Athearn, his first ancestor here on the Island. The Athearns are of course the family that owns and runs Morning Glory Farm.

The Federated Church’s house tour committee happily announces that its upcoming fourth annual Edgartown tour will take place on Tuesday, August 10, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. This year’s tour will include four wonderful homes with seven sites to tour through, including a charming boathouse on the harbor!
