Chilmark is enjoying a few more warm days of sunshine. All the outdoor chores are getting done as we try to prepare ourselves for the cold weather headed our way.

The annual firefighters’ Halloween party for children took place at the Community Center on Saturday evening and there seemed to be almost as many adults in costume as there were children! It was a joyful party and enjoyed by all. Many thanks go to Katie Carroll who put it all together so successfully this year.

The Chilmark Public Library and the Friends of the Chilmark Library hosted a wild and scary Fun House on Saturday. The library’s teen group set up a maze that entertained children and adults in the meeting room. Andrew and Peter Ruimerman, Galen Mayhew, Thorpe and Kieran Karabes, Brigida Larsen and Jessica and Mariah Campbell were the designers of the creative decorations. The library thanks them for their great team effort.

Please make note that the annual all Island flu shots will be given on Veterens Day, Nov. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. Up-Island folks are required to go to the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury to register and then drive to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School where they will receive their shot. If you have questions, please call 508-687-7158.

Tomorrow, Nov. 7 will be the fall gathering of the Women’s Symposium at the Chilmark Community Center from 9 a.m. to noon. All women are invited. There will be talks, discussions and refreshments. Donations are appreciated to continue the twice a year gathering of the symposium.

Island theatres will be showing the movie The Vampire’s Assistant this weekend. Jessica Carlson, teenaged daughter of Catha and Dave Carlson of Chilmark and New York city and granddaughter of Bob and Barbara Day of West Tisbury has her first major movie role in this movie. She also has been seen recently in several commercials and documentries. Jessica may be known to folks as she worked at the Chilmark Community Center this past summer and has been a seasonal resident all her life. Cheers from us all!

Bob and Bonnie George of Quansoo and New York city are happy to tell us that there was a large group of Vineyard friends at the recent marriage of their son, Andrew, to Stefanie Nelson on Oct. 24 at Congregation Shalom in Milwaukee, Wisc.

The Chilmark Church will welcome the Rev. Arlene Bodge as preacher on Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. The church continues to host the Tuesday evening soup suppers at the meeting room at the church. All are welcome at 5:30 p.m.

Harriette Otteson is at her Chilmark home and eagerly awaiting the return of her photos taken on her recent trip to China. Many of us will hope see them. She enjoyed an extensive tour of that country in October. She, with a tour group, began sightseeing in Shanghai and moved on to Beijing where they climbed the Great Wall. In Xian they visited the excavated terra cotta warriors. They enjoyed an overnight visit with local farmers in a remote corn farming community and then a four-day cruise down the Yangtze River to the Three Gorges Dam, the longest dam in the world. The next stop was Chendu where they were privileged to see the Panda Preserve and learn of the shrinking habitat of those rare animals. The tour was supposed to include traveling to Tibet but the government of China closed the area to foreign travel because it was the 60th anniversary of communism in China and they feared some unrest. The travelers were taken instead to the ancient cites of Lijiang, an ancient trading center on a canal, and to Kenming where they saw some of the oldest buildings in China. The final destination of the tour was Hong Kong. Needless to say, Harriette had a most interesting and enjoyable trip.

There will be a continued public hearing at the Chilmark Community Center on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. held by the Chilmark wireless communications equipment and facilities plan committee. They will hear details of a plan by the American Tower Corporation. Those still hoping to have cell phone service in Chilmark before they go out of style should attend and hear the latest proposal.

Hospice will be holding their annual fundraiser, Handmade from the Heart Bazaar, at the Daniel Fisher House on Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are asking for donations of handmade items that can be sold at the bazaar. Please call 508-693-0189 if you have questions or can make something for their sale.

And now to tell you what Nashowakemmuck, the Algonquin name for Chilmark, really means. The Banks histories say it means halfway house . . . the significance is lost in history but perhaps referred to an Indian house or stockade or schoolhouse. Maybe it referred to an old house in Chilmark that may still be standing! More on old house research next time.
