After 100 Island high school students called in sick on Wednesday — including 10 football players, 10 members of the boys’ soccer team, and the cheerleading coach — Vineyard schools superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss confirmed that Saturday’s football game and the season’s final two boys’ soccer matches would be canceled.

“But we are not considering closing the school yet,” he said. “We are monitoring [the spread of H1N1 flu] and the question is, can we funciton? Yes. Six-seventh of the kids are there, all but one staff member are there.”

Among elementary schools, there is one confirmed case at each Edgartown and Tisbury, two in West Tisbury, and five of six cases at the Oak Bluffs elementary school; Mr. Weiss said many of these were siblings of flu-stricken high schoolers.
