Chilmark has enjoyed a week of lovely fall weather. The folks visiting us now are looking for fish rather than suntans and the mood is generally turning to the enthusiasm of the hunt! Let’s hope that the fish cooperate. We are all looking forward to the beginning of the 64th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby on Sept. 13.

Some excitement was generated in town this week as the former Derick house in Menemsha was demolished and carried off. No doubt, soon a new house will grow in that locale.

We send condolences to the extended family and many friends of Albert B. Littlefield who died in July. A celebration of his life will take place at the Polly Hill Arboretum at 11 a.m. on Sept. 19. A potluck luncheon is planned and we are asked to bring a side dish or salad. Albert was known to many folks Islandwide and beloved by all. It is appropriate that the gathering is at Polly Hill, as it is next door to the house in which he was born. We will long remember his good cheer, great stories and general happiness with life. If you have questions, please call his daughter Lia Kahler at 508-645-3325 for details.

The Menemsha Fisheries Development Fund is sponsoring a documentary movie at the library on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. It is called A Sea Change and deals with the acidification of the ocean. All are welcome at no charge.

Mark your calendars for the opening of the newly renovated West Tisbury town hall on Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m.

Claire Chalfoun and Lyn Hinds are Vineyard artists who will be showing their landscape paintings at the Chilmark library from Saturday, Sept. 12 through Oct. 1. The show may be seen during regular library hours.

The Yard at Beetlebung corner is offering an Evening of Dance with artist Carolyn Dorfman on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. Please call The Yard at 508-645-9662 for details.

I cannot let this date go by without commenting. When we stop a minute today to honor those many people who died in the attack on 9/11 on the World Trade Center, let’s remember David Rivers and Welles Crowther, two young men with Chilmark roots who died that day. We wish their families peace.
